Mental Health, International Clinical Trials, Dementia, Accelerated Access Collaborative, Brain Cancer Mission etc.

20th May 2019

Today marks International Clinical Trials Day as well as the kick-off of Dementia Action Week, but I'd also like to briefly thank all of you who worked hard and shared your stories during last week's Mental Health Awareness Week - it makes all the difference. As you might have seen, it was given some attention during last week's PMQs, where mental health was mentioned by the PM, the Leader of the Opposition and Ian Blackford MP (SNP Westminster Leader) and others.

Last week was also when the APHG heard very timely from the recently appointed Chief Executive of the boosted Accelerated Access Collaborative, Dr Sam Roberts, and  Sir John Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at University of Oxford, about life sciences, sector deal 2 and next steps. If you are interested in learning more  and would like to receive a summary of what this briefing session discussed and speakers reflected on - please get in touch and I would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Going back to Parliament, last week Health Secretary Matt Hancock and others paid tribute to Baroness Jowell during the Tessa Jowell brain Cancer Mission debate and announced a new brain cancer treatment aid in England. Also, I would like to highlight the urgent question asked by Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Social Care, Barbara Keeley on the Learning Disabilities and Mortality Review. And, if you're interested in the functioning of Parliament and political scrutiny, have a look at this debate on the effectiveness and influence of the select committee system

This week Parliamentarians will discuss - just to name a few - arthritis and employment, problem drug use in Scotland, suicide in the farming community, the domestic abuse bill, adult survivors of child sexual abuse, the (still) forthcoming Social Care Green Paper, and the UK's future clinical research capability.

Have a lovely week,

Best wishes,

Emelie
