Leadership race, Mental Health and Prevention Green Paper

Leadership race, Mental Health and Prevention Green Paper

17th June 2019

Good afternoon,

One cannot but keep a close eye to the Conservative leadership race, wherein until last week current Health Secretary Matt Hancock took part (but is now endorsing Boris Johnson) and amongst others, former and longest serving Health Secretary (current Foreign Affairs Secretary) Jeremy Hunt still participates. At last nights Channel 4's debate, two candidates stated they would prioritise (adult) social care if becoming PM, with Rory Stewart MP calling it the 'great unfinished revolution' and Jeremy Hunt putting it at the top of his list alongside a strong focus on literacy. At the time of writing, six contenders will take part in the second ballot taking place tomorrow, ballots will continue until two remain and the final vote will be put to Conservative Party members. Tomorrow BBC One will host a live election debate with those still in the race after the ballot - if you have a burning question, you can fill out the form and ask the Conservative Leaders hopeful here.

But back to health policy, today PM Theresa May confirmed that a White Paper will be published by DHSC and MoJ before the end of the year in response to review by Sir Simon Wessely of the Mental Health Act. We also have heard rumours that the Prevention Green Paper is due relatively soon, but unfortunately despite the leadership hopefuls' focus on social care, the Green Paper has not been published yet. I would like to highlight however, an event by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Assistive Technology on SmartHomes and Social Care on 16th July - do feel free to get in touch if interested to learn more. In the meantime, last week Baroness Blackwood spoke on health tech at the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) and about AI and technology to improve patient outcomes at CogX, the festival of AI and emerging technologies.

Have a lovely week,

Best wishes,

Emelie
