The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) is descended from the Fellowship of Surgeons, established in the 14th century, and aims to enable surgeons to achieve and maintain the highest standards of surgical practice and patient care.
The RCS's main activities are:
- Supervising the training of surgeons in approved posts
- Providing educational and practical workshops for surgeons and other medical professionals at all stages of their careers
- Examining trainees to ensure the highest professional standards
- Promoting and supporting surgical research in the UK
- Supporting the audit and evaluation of clinical effectiveness
- Providing support and advice for surgeons in all stages of their careers
- Providing a mechanism whereby trusts can seek independent advice
- Housing a current and historical information resource centre for surgeons in the library and museums
- Acting as an advisory body to the Department of Health, health authorities, Trusts, hospitals and other professional bodies
- Collaborating with other medical and academic organisations in the UK and worldwide
- Seeking to convey the importance of, and providing support for, good, effective communication and interpersonal relationships between patients and surgeons
