Founded in 1916 as a professional organisation for trained nurses, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today has over 400,000 members.
The RCN's main duties include:
- representing the interests of nurses and nursing and being their voice locally, nationally and internationally
- lobbying governments and others to develop and implement policy that improves the quality of patient care, and builds on the importance of nurses, health care assistants and nursing students to health outcomes
- supporting and protecting the value of nurses and nursing staff in all their diversity, their terms and conditions of employment in all employment sectors, and the interests of nurses professionally
- educating nurses professionally and academically, and providing a resource of professional expertise and leadership
