Major Developments (27th June – 1st
July)
APHG Meeting with Sir Nigel Crisp
Sir Nigel Crisp, Chief Executive of the NHS, this
week addressed the group on the progress of the NHS Plan and future challenges.
The briefing proved very popular with Parliamentarians with almost 50 MPs and
Peers attending the event. Should you require further information about the
meeting, please see our website, www.healthinparliament.org.uk.
Health Committee Chair
It has been reported this week that Kevin Barron MP
(Labour - Rother
Valley) has received
the Labour nomination to become chair of the Health Select Committee when it
is reformed later this year – this ends weeks of speculation as to who
will receive the coveted post. Also it is believed that Dr Ian Gibson MP
(Labour - Norwich North) will not be reinstated as Chair of the Science &
Technology Committee. However the report also states that John Denham MP (Labour
- Southampton,Itchen) remains as Health Chair, when in fact he remains as
Home Affairs Chair! To see the Guardian report in full, please click
here.
Healthcare Commission reports on
Sickness Absence
The Healthcare Commission this week released new figures that show nursing
ward staff take more sick days than most other public sector workers. On
average, 16.8 days per ward staff member a year are lost to sickness. For
further details, please click

News from Holyrood
The Scottish Parliament has banned smoking in public
places. MSPs voted in favour of the Smoking,
Health and Social Care (Scotland)
Bill by a majority of 97 to 17, legislating for a total ban. A ban in England
now seems increasingly likely and is expected to be covered in the
forthcoming round of legislation, under the Health Protection Bill.
The
Scottish Executive has also announced the appointment of a new Deputy Health
Minister, Lewis Macdonald (Lab, Aberdeen Central), who has been a MSP since
1999 and moves from the environment department.
