Major Developments (19th July – 30th July)

European Working Time Directive

The EU Working Time Directive came into force today, limiting the hours junior doctors can work to 58 per week. For more details on the Directive and to view the information from our meeting on the topic last month, please refer to our website http://www.healthinparliament.org.uk/event_diary.html and to Department of Health below.

APHG to host Parliamentary Launch of ‘Fat Nation’

FURTHER DETAILS TO FOLLOW

On Tuesday 7th September, APHG will be hosting the official parliamentary launch of the BBC’s ‘Fat Nation’ initiative – a two year campaign by the BBC, inspired by alarm over the rising rates of obesity that have taken hold in the United States.

‘Fat Nation: The Big Challenge’ starts 2 days later on 9 September with a nine-programme series that will try to lower the average weight (currently 10st 10lbs) of 200 adults and children living in one street in the Handsworth Wood area of Birmingham. The volunteers will be used as inspiration to the country in an attempt to change diets, fitness regimes and lifestyles, with BBC national and local radio and television taking up the fight thereafter.

Arm’s Length Body Review

The Department of Health Arms Length Body Review – discussed by Lord Warner with the APHG last month – was announced last week. See Department of Health below for further details.

Star Ratings

Star Ratings and Foundation Trusts – the NHS star ratings 2003-04 and latest wave of Foundation Trusts were announced to Parliament last week. For full details please see Written Ministerial Statements and Department of Health below

APHG Advisory Board

The APHG is delighted to announce that Chairman of the Healthcare Commission Sir Ian Kennedy has joined the APHG’s Advisory Board.

The Healthcare Commission, established in April this year, is set to play a crucial role in the ongoing modernisation of the NHS, and we look forward to working closely with Sir Ian in keeping Parliament updated with its work.

Our grateful thanks also to Dame Deirdre Hine, who as former chair of CHI (precursor to the Healthcare Commission) has been a tremendous supporter of APHG in the last 3 years, and now steps down from the Board to allow Sir Ian to take her place.
