Major Developments (20th October – 24th
October)
The ‘last’ day of the
committee stage of the Health and Social Care Bill took place in the Lords on
Monday, with the House finally adjourned at six minutes
before five o'clock. This meant that the House returned on Thursday, and
finally sent the Bill back to the Commons. (see Lords Chamber below) GPs
voted to accept contract changes proposed by the DoH (see BMA news release
Consultant
ballot vote allows progress on new medical academic contract) Wednesday - APHG breakfast
briefing with Professor Alasdair Breckenridge, chairman of the Medicines
and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Thursday
- Former speaker Baroness Boothroyd raised a ‘suppertime debate’ discussing
the costs to the NHS of overseas visitors. Peers then debated a Tory motion
to annul patients' forums. (see Lords Chamber below) The
health select committee has decided to summon fast food chains and Coca-Cola
to answer the charge that they are profiting from children’s ill health.
Chair David Hinchliffe has made the decision
to call corporate witnesses as part of its inquiry into obesity. Coca-Cola, McDonald's and possibly
Cadbury are set to give evidence on November 27. BUPA
