THE EUROPEAN WORKING TIME DIRECTIVE

Breakfast Briefing with Prof Sir George Alberti, Dr David Colin-Thome, Prof Carole Black and Beverly Malone

Dining Room A, House of Commons

Wednesday 14th July 2004, 8:30am – 10:00am

Described by the Royal College of Physicians as “the most important change to the fabric of hospital medicine for a generation”, the European Working Time Directive will come into full force in August this year, when it is extended to cover doctors in training. Following a continental buffet breakfast, the meeting will look at the key issues surrounding the Working Time Directive, including its implications for emergency care, hospital services and primary care, its effect on both doctors and nursing staff and an overview of the pilots and new ways of working that have been developed by the Royal Colleges of Medicine and NHS Modernisation Agency in answer to the Directive.
