Major Developments (3rd November – 7th
November)
Foundation Hospitals. The Health and Social Care Bill was defeated in House
of Lords on Thursday by 150 votes to 100, sending the Bill back to the
Commons in a fortnight’s time. Dr John Reid has vowed that the Bill will be
passed, claiming, "It is not right the will of the Commons on such a
major issue should just be thrown out by the unelected Lords." See Lords Chamber
below
Conservative Health Team. Following Michael Howard appointment as Leader of the
Opposition, his campaign manager and former Shadow Health Minister Dr Liam
Fox has been promoted to Party Chairman. This means a new Health Team will be
announced this week
The Liberal Democrat Health Team has also seen changes, with Sarah
Teather promoted only months after her by-election victory in Brent East. The
new team comprises Paul Burstow MP, Patsy Calton MP and Sarah Teather MP
Obesity and Fast Food. Both Parliament and Government have been active in seeking
to tackle the growing problem of childhood obesity this week. After health
questions on Tuesday, MP for Stourbridge Deborah Shipley moved to present a
bill banning fast food advertising to children. The bill is due to return
next week. On Sunday the Food Standards Agency published a discussion paper
on possible options for action on the promotion of foods that could improve
children's diets and health. The APHG is planning to discuss obesity in
