Major Developments (10th January – 14th January)

National Audit Office Publishes Report

The National Audit Office, which reports to Parliament through the Public Accounts committee, has published its latest report ‘Patient Choice at the point of GP contact’.

The report has drawn into focus the progress of the NHS National Programme for IT, with the finding that only 63 bookings had been made using the new ebooking system.

John Reid explained that the situation was not as "dramatically bad as it sounds", adding that the targets would still be met. He stated that the NpfIT was running "weeks, but not months or years late", adding that was not surprising given the "magnitude" of the operation.

NAO head Sir John Bourn said getting GPs on board was key to giving patients choice.

See National Audit Office below for full details.

APHG Public Health Seminar Series - Smoking (12th January)

APHG’s seminar on smoking took place last Wednesday morning in a packed Dining Room A. Speakers included Sir Derek Wanless, Nick Adkin, Head of Tobacco Policy at the Department of Health and Lord Faulkner of Worcester.

For a full report on the meeting, including attendees and the full agenda, please see APHG and Website below

Smoking Bill introduced

The Smoking in Public Places (Wales) Bill, a private member's Bill introduced by Julie Morgan (Lab, Cardiff North), received its first reading on Wednesday 12th January.

Health Committee Investigation continues

The health committee continued its investigation this week into the influence of the pharmaceutical industry, taking evidence from the pharmaceutical companies GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca, as well as the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.
