APHG welcomed back advisory board Member Sir Ian Kennedy, chairman of the Healthcare Commission, for his second APHG briefing:- To consult with MPs and Peers on ‘Assessment for Improvement’, his ongoing ‘Standards Consultation’ that will result in proposals for a new system of healthcare inspection, audit and improvement. Public Accounts Committee publish report

Public Accounts Committee MPs have criticised inequalities in the prescription of anti-cancer drugs, waiting times for scans and chemotherapy treatments. Tackling Cancer Services in England: Saving More Lives, published last week, states that people in northern England are twice as likely to die of cancer than those in the south and that overall survival rates are falling behind the rest of Europe. See The Committee Corridor for further details.

Health Select Committee inquiry into HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health

The Health Committee heard the first evidence session of its new enquiry into HIV/Aids, with representations from the Terence Higgins Trust, the Health Protection Agency and the Family Planning Association. See The Committee Corridor for the latest uncorrected transcripts from Committee meetings.

Obesity

In the wake of the White Paper, Obesity continues to be a focus of interest in Parliament. Nigel Evans lead a very well-attended Westminster Hall Debate on childhood obesity last week, at which he welcomed APHG’s White Paper series and obesity meeting (due to be held next week- details at APHG and Website below). The Health Select Committee’s obesity report will be the focus of a Westminster Hall debate scheduled for 10th Feb, a week after the deadline for submissions to their new report on the White Paper itself.

Healthcare Commission calls for stringent regulations for cosmetic treatment

The Healthcare Commission has recommended that there be more scrutiny of currently unregulated cosmetic procedures such as botox, chemical peels and injectable fillers. In a report published today, the Commission suggests further review of current and emerging procedures to ensure the safety and quality of cosmetic services in England.
