Major Developments (27th – 31st March)

APHG meeting on Older People’s Services

APHG held an excellent meeting on older people’s services in which Professor Ian Philp, the National Director for Older People, talked about care for older people within the National Service Framework.

To see the meeting report please see our website, www.healthinparliament.org.uk

This meeting was held in the same week as the publication of both the Living Well in Later Life report by the Audit Commission, Healthcare Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection, as well as the Wanless Social Care Review for the King’s Fund. Living Well in Later Life concludes that "deep-rooted cultural attitudes to ageing" are harming the provision of care for older people. The Wanless review, meanwhile, recommends that spending on personal care for older people in England should treble to about £30bn a year by 2026 to meet the needs of an ageing population.

Health matters continue to dominate parliamentary agenda

Following the large number of calls for debates on health during last week’s Business of the House session, this week has again seen many requests for debates to be held on the NHS. See Business of the House.

Key issues from the Department of Health and NHS

Monday 27th March

Winter Report 2005 – 2006: There has been a big improvement in NHS performance during the winter period, according to a report published by the Department of Health. The Winter Report 2005 – 2006 begins by looking back to the winter of 1999/2000, a period that saw the NHS struggling to cope with a large scale flu epidemic. It then goes on to compare that winter to the recent winter of 2005/2006, where a programme of reforms and investment within the NHS resulted in a far better handling of an equally severe few months.

Thursday 30th March

Hewitt announces new pay deals for NHS staff: Secretary of State for Health Patricia Hewitt today announced ‘fair and affordable’ pay awards for NHS staff. The increases mean that the Government has accepted all of the Pay Review Body recommendations for NHS staff pay uplifts, alt
