Major Developments (21st – 25th November)

Parliamentary Health Questions

Health Questions this week included NHS Dentistry, Herceptin, PCT reconfiguration and Avian Influenza. For further details, please click here.

Health Select Committee

The Health Committee has announced that it will hold two oral evidence sessions in respect of the Committee’s inquiry on Annual Public Expenditure. The Committee’s terms of reference include a requirement to examine the expenditure of the Department of Health. Evidence will be heard from Sir Nigel Crisp, Chief Executive, NHS, and Department of Health officials and also from Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Health and Department of Health officials. See below for further details.

Statement on seasonal flu vaccine supplies

Secretary of State, Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP gave a statement this week about the seasonal flu vaccine. The opposition criticised the government’s “inefficiency and incompetence” in light of the shortage of flu vaccines this winter. For full details, please click here.

APHG Meeting on Patient Choice

APHG will hold a meeting this Wednesday on Patient Choice: By December 2005 NHS patients will be given a choice of four or five hospitals for non-emergency care, which aims to involve patients more in decisions about their treatment and to drive service improvements, transforming the NHS into a more responsive, patient-led service. Patient choice also raises questions about how healthcare is delivered. These range from the information patients will need to exercise choice to how it will affect the NHS system as a whole. There are concerns about what patient choice really means and to what extent it will create an effective patient- centred NHS.

This seminar will seek to address some of these key themes. Margaret Edwards, Director of Access at the Department of Health, will provide the keynote address on patient choice in elective care. The meeting will also consider the practicalities of patient choice in light of national pilots carried out by Dr Foster Ltd, and Dr Gillian Braunold, GP Lead for the National Programme for IT will provide the GP’s perspective. The British Medical Association will also be giving their views on patient choice. For further details please contact us.
