APHG briefing: The Healthcare Commission – An update

Sir Ian Kennedy, the Chairman of the Healthcare Commission, has addressed a meeting of the Associate Parliamentary Health Group in parliament. He talked primarily about the results of the first annual health check, which assessed the performance of all 570 NHS trusts in England. Click here to read more.

 

Government response to Health Select Committee report on NHS charges published

The Government have laid before Parliament their response to the Health Select Committee Report on NHS Charges. They are responding to the 22 recommendations made by the Committee on areas such as prescription charges, car parking charges, dental charges, on eligibility for NHS sight tests and on the hospital travel costs scheme. Minister calls for better efficiency and productivity

Improved NHS productivity and better efficiency could unlock resources worth £2.2bn for the NHS and improve patient care at the same time, Health Minister Andy Burnham has said. Click here to read more.

NATIONAL AUDIT OFFICE

 

The National Audit Office scrutinises public spending on behalf of Parliament. It reports to the Public Accounts Committee and is totally independent of government. The role of the NAO is to audit the accounts of all central government departments, agencies, and other public bodies, reporting to Parliament on the economy, efficiency and effectiveness with which they have used public money.

 

There was no news from the National Audit Office this week.

Monday 16th October

Minister calls for end of 'silo surgeries' and confusing locations

Health Minister Lord Warner has urged the NHS and local councils to offer patients access to GPs, health services and social workers under one roof in new 'super-centres', as part of a drive to bring down the organisational and physical barriers within healthcare, and between health and social care. Speaking at a national NHS Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) event, he told delegates that patients should not simply have to put up with the services they are given and where they are located. Instead, he said, the nature and location of services should be planned much more around the needs of the patient.

Patients to have information prescribed alongside medicines

Patients are soon to be prescribed information from their doctor as well as medicines, empowering people to take control of their own illness. As patients only remember on average 10% of consultations, it is hoped that having a list of specific information resources relevant to individual circumstances will help people to seek further information and make choices about their health care. The 2006 White Paper Our Health Our Care Our Say contained a commitment to introduce Information Prescriptions for everyone with a long term condition or care need by 2008.
