Major Developments [10th-14th October]

APHG Briefing – The Independent Reconfiguration Panel

The Associate Parliamentary Health Group will be holding a briefing with the Independent Reconfiguration Panel on Tuesday 18th October. Following high-profile cases of contentious hospital service closures in Kidderminster and elsewhere, the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) was established in 2003 to provide independent advice on service change, sensitive to both the local impact and national objectives.

This meeting will be an excellent opportunity to hear from Dr. Peter Barrett, Chair of the IRP and Tony Shaw, Chief Executive. They will be speaking to us on the Panel’s work so far and their future aims in dealing with health service changes.

For further information and details of the meeting please see below.

Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill

The Lords this week debated plans to allow doctors to help terminally patients die. Peers discussed a report by a special select committee, which examined the bill introduced during the last parliamentary session. For further details, please click here.

Audit Commission publish report on Payment by Results

The Audit Commission this week published a report on Payment by Results. Introduced in April 2005, Payment by Results is the new financial system intended to cover the majority of hospital and community services in the NHS. This report reviews experiences of the system so far, assessing its impact nationally and locally and drawing out practical recommendations for NHS bodies and policymakers. For full details, please click here.

Call for a Statement regarding the financial state of the NHS

The Opposition Leader of the House, Chris Grayling MP, highlighted the need for an opportunity to question Ministers and debate issues surrounding the current state of the NHS. For full details, please click here.
