Major Developments (7th March – 11th March)NHS Continuing Care The
Health Select Committee held their first evidence session on NHS Continuing
Care. Witnesses giving evidence included the Alzheimers Society, Age Concern
and the Royal College of Nursing. For full details, please see below. Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism The Health Select Committee published its
report on The Prevention of Venous
Thromboembolism in Hospitalised Patients. The report claims that blood lots kill more than 25,000
people in Delivering ‘Choosing
Health’ The Department of Health set out their plans on how the commitments
made in the Public Health White Paper will translate into practical benefits
for local communities. Teaching children to eat well and encouraging them to
exercise is vital if Labour present “mini manifesto”
on health Tony Blair has promised that under a Labour
government no one will wait more than 18 weeks for NHS treatment. Speaking at
the launch of Labour’s mini manifesto with Health Secretary John Reid,
the prime minister said it was time to put the “flesh
on the bones” of government pledges. For

National Audit Office has published a report on implementing the NHS cancer
plan, stating
that good progress
has been made on improving cancer care in The Week Ahead (7th March – 11th March)Monday 14th March John Reid makes an announcement on the use of genetic
information in the insurance industry. Health minister Stephen Ladyman unveils maternity
“good practice guide” at the Royal College of Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists. NHS Confederation - publishes election manifesto. BMA publishes report on hospital A&E care, with
reference to four-hour targets. Tuesday 15th
March Conservative health spokesman Earl Howe
asks whether the government’s investment in cancer care services
represents value for money. Baroness Knight of Collingtree asks the
government what steps it is taking to abolish mixed-sex wards in NHS
hospitals. Mental Capacity Bill - first day at
report stage in the Lords. Rosie Winterton addresses APG on autism
and mental health. Dr Brian Iddon MP & sanofi-aventis
host parliamentary seminar on obesity with Dr David Haslam, National

March In the Commons, Nicholas Soames MP - debate on Westminster Hall debate - Sandra Gidley MP on the
treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Melanie Johnson launches new standards on
sexual health services in the NHS. Work and pensions secretary Alan Johnson
makes a statement on disability benefits APHG discusses the Future of Patient and Public Involvement in Health with Health Minister Rosie Winterton and Harry Cayton,
National Director for patients and the public. Obesity APG discusses the link between
obesity and the risk of cancer. The Hansard Society and Diabetes APG publish a report on the
findings of a three month online consultation on diabetes. Thursday 17th
March
