Major Developments (20th – 24th March)

Budget – lack of NHS mention

Following his budget statement on Wednesday 22nd March, many opposition MPs this week criticised the Chancellor Gordon Brown for failing to mention the National Health Service. Many Conservative MPs have responded with calls for more debate on the future of the NHS and health service deficits. See Business of the House.

APHG Seminar on the Role of the Independent Sector in the NHS

APHG held an excellent meeting this week on the Role of the Independent Sector in the NHS. Speakers included Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, who discussed the use of the independent sector as part of the wider NHS reform programme. Dr Jennifer Dixon from the King’s Fund and Rt Hon Kevin Barron MP considered ISTCs and the Health Select Committee’s current inquiry. For further details of the meeting, please see our website, www.healthinparliament.org.uk

Blair to see through NHS reforms

Following his admission that it was a mistake to pre-announce that he would step down from Downing Street before the next election, it has been widely reported in today’s press that Tony Blair wants to tackle the financial crisis in the NHS and push through reforms before he stands down as Prime Minister.

Report on Older People’s Services published

A report has been published today, ‘Living well in later life’ by the Audit Commission, the Healthcare Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection. The assessment highlights the progress made but also issues such as care problems in hospitals, including moving older people from ward to ward, a lack of help during mealtimes and too little care after they leave hospital. Please click here for more information on the report.

APHG will hold a meeting this week with National Director for Older People, Professor Ian Philp, National Clinical Director for Primary Care, Dr David Colin-Thome & Baroness Sally Greengross. For further details, please see below.
