Parliamentary Debate on the Management of the Health Service

A heated parliamentary debate has been held on the management of the NHS. Citing the current financial crisis and associated job losses, ward and bed closures and service reductions in the NHS, The Shadow Health Minister Andrew Lansley argued that the DH was being mismanaged. Lords Block Assisted Suicide Bill

The House of Lords has voted to block a bill which would permit assisted suicide for the terminally ill after an impassioned debate which brought out differences within political parties and religious faiths. Click here to view the debate.

 

New Learning Disabilities ‘Tsar’ Appointed

Nicola Smith, 43, from West Sussex has been appointed at the Department of Health to help lead government policy on the lives of people with learning disabilities. Click here to read more.

 

DH Pledges Maximum 18 Week Wait for Treatment

A framework setting out how NHS organisations will deliver a maximum wait of 18 weeks for patients, from referral to hospital treatment by December 2008, has been published. Click here to read more.

 

Fewer Drugs to be Used to Treat Depression

APHG Seminar: Improving Patient Safety Through Good Design

A meeting will be held this Wednesday looking at how good design can improve the delivery of healthcare and produce better outcomes. We will be hearing a key note speech by the new Minister for Patient Safety, Andy Burnham, and also from the National Patient Safety Agency and NHS Trusts on how good design can bring significant cost benefits and improved patient safety to the health service.
