Major Developments (6th – 10th March)

Sir Nigel Crisp resigns as NHS Chief Executive

Sir Nigel Crisp has resigned as head of the NHS in the face of increasing fiscal deficits. He is to take early retirement after more than five years in the post, during which he oversaw the implementation of the first half of the ten-year NHS Plan. Sir Nigel said he was 'saddened' by the financial problems in the health service. The NHS faces a deficit this year of up to £900m, double last year's shortfall.

Cameron targets Crisp resignation in PMQs

Tony Blair refused to deny that Sir Nigel Crisp was sacked as head of the NHS, amid robust exchanges on the issue at Prime Minister's question time. Conservative leader David Cameron urged ministers to take responsibility for what is predicted to be a significant deficit in the health service. Mr Blair said that Sir Nigel should be proud of the improvement made in the NHS, including extra doctors and nurses and a reduction in waiting lists.

Local Services and Dentistry highlighted in Health Questions

At this month’s Parliamentary Health Questions the focus was primarily on the provision and quality of primary care services such as Dentistry and General Practice. There was also strong interest in the structural aspects of the NHS such as fiscal controls and PCT mergers.

Go ahead given for St Bart’s and the Royal London

Doctors have welcomed the long-awaited approval of the scheme to rebuild two teaching hospitals in London in the biggest private finance initiative within the National Health Service to date. Patricia Hewitt, the health secretary, approved the redevelopment of St Bartholomew's hospital and the Royal London after delays which patient groups and the hospital trust claimed had added £35m to the £1.1bn cost.
