Major Developments (5th – 9th June)

NHS deficits

NHS deficits have dominated the week’s agenda. On Monday, Monitor published the preliminary year-end results for NHS foundation trusts for 2005-06 (click here to read more). Then on Wednesday, Secretary of State for Health Patricia Hewitt announced in Parliament that the NHS deficit in England has reached £512m - more than double the amount last year (click here to read more). That same day, the National Audit Office and the Audit Commission published their joint study, Financial Management in the NHS, assessing the NHS accounts from 2004-05 (click here to read more).

Chief Medical Officer’s 6-month report

Sir Ian Carruthers, acting chief executive of the NHS, has published his first six-month report, which also addresses the issue of NHS deficits. The report acknowledges that deficits are too high, but outlines the initial success of additional measures to return the NHS to financial balance. Click here to read more.

Productivity and Efficiency Report

The new NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has published its first report detailing the savings that could be made by improving efficiency. The report claims that patient care can be improved and savings of up to £700m per year can be achieved through the implementation of efficiency measures. Click here to read more.

Scheme to combine NHS and business best practice

The boards of NHS foundation trusts are to benefit from access to advice from some of Britain’s leading companies thanks to a scheme launched by Monitor. The programme aims to foster mutually beneficial relationships between the most developed NHS foundation trusts and leading companies. Click here to read more.

Herceptin given go-ahead by NICE

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has approved the use of the drug Herceptin for use in early stage HER2 positive breast cancer.

Chronic Pain Policy Coalition Parliamentary Launch

The Chronic Pain Policy Coalition is to be formally launched on Wednesday at an event in the Attlee Suite of the House of Commons.
