Major Developments (17th January-21st January)

 

Access to data for drug side-effects

(Monday 17th January)

As part of a series of measures to monitor drug side effects (The Yelllow Card System), it was announced by Health Minister, Lord Warner, that patients and researchers will now be able to look at data on the safety of different medicines.

 

More hospitals given go-ahead for Foundation Status application (Tuesday 18th January)

Dr John Reid announced the next group of NHS Trusts allowed to make a formal application for NHS Foundation Trust status. The Secretary of State confirmed that all 32 Trusts, including 8 Mental Health Trusts were successful in their preliminary applications. They are now asked to submit a more detailed application for foundation status.

 

NAO publish “Patient Choice at the Point of GP Referral”

(Wednesday 19th January)

The National Audit Office published their report regarding Patient Choice at the Point of GP Referral. According to the report to Parliament by Sir John Bourn, Head of the NAO, progress has been made towards delivering choice at referral through improved organisational infrastructure and IT support.

Tuesday 25th

 

Mr Nigel Evans and Dr Ian Gibson will host Private Members’ debates on obesity in young people and stem cell research in the Uk respectively.

 

Presentation of Mr Archie Norman’s Bill on Cystic Fibrosis (Exemption from Prescription Charges).

 

The Mental Capacity Bill will have its first day at Committee stage in the House of Lords.

 

The Lords science and technology sub-committee I will look at the scientific aspects of ageing.

 

Labour MPs Brian Iddon and John Austin co-chair a Talking Health parliamentary health seminar on osteoporosis.

 

Ann Abraham, Parliamentary and health service ombudsman delivers the Centre for Public Scrutiny's second anniversary annual lecture.

 

The Commons public accounts committee publishes a report on tackling cancer in England.

 

Wednesday 26th January

 

Westminster Hall Private Members’ Debate: Mr Kevin Barron on implementation of National Institute for Clinical Excellence infertility guidelines.

 

Thursday 27th January

 

In the Lords, the Mental Capacity Bill has its second day of committee discussions.

 

Mr Bob Laxton will host an Adjournment debate on Childhood anaemia.

 

Health Select Committee inquiry begins into new developments in HIV/Aids and sexual health policy.

 

Friday 28th January

 

The Healthcare Commission publishes an overview of the number of facilities where cosmetic surgery is carried out and examines report findings related to cosmetic surgery national minimum standards.
